1. In what way are they likely to respond to the video on their own, e.g. make notes, do an activity, think about the topic (learner-generated)?

This video is about the development of Chinese characters. It talks about oracle bones and the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang, who was first inscribed on the seal during the Qin Dynasty. Then the author of the video tells the story of Chinese farmers in the modern real events of emperor Qin Shi Huang ļ¼Œterracotta warriors was discovered for the first time, I think see here, the students will be attracted to Chinaā€™s historical sites, the students to respond to the most common way is probably to search online material, but more conditional students I think they will choose a trip to the field directly for sightseeing, This will play a positive role in promoting studentsā€™ Chinese learning in the future.

2.How would students get feedback on the activity that you set? What medium or technology would they and/or you use for getting and giving feedback on their activity?

At the end of the course, students will be required to give a group presentation and a quiz, which is made by using the ā€œMIKe formā€, a software that can see the answers submitted by the respondents in the background. I can see not only the overall score of the students, but also the specific question. This has a positive effect on how I give feedback to students.

3. How much work for you would that activity cause? Would the work be both manageable and worthwhile? Could the activity be scaled for larger numbers of students?

First of all, I donā€™t think I have much work to do. What I need to do is to make handouts for each class. Secondly, I need to keep in touch with my students after class and give feedback to their questions according to their needs. The last thing I need to do is to evaluate their overall learning in this semester according to their final presentation and quiz. Also, I will adjust my lecture progress and flow in real time according to studentsā€™ feedback in class to ensure that they can follow the course progress.

4. How could the video have been designed to generate more or better activity from viewers or students?

I think the first thing for a video to attract viewers is that the name of the video must be brief enough, so that the audience can understand the main body of the video after seeing the title. Secondly, some animations should be properly added in the video, so that students will not feel boring. In addition, there should be a comment section to make the viewer feel involved.

First, for interactive learning resources, I think the most important thing is to communicate with my learners. Like the topic we discussed in our second blog post, modern education has moved away from soup-based teaching, and teachers need to devise more ways to help students more vividly understand what they’re learning.

So I will adopt the method of real-time teaching. If there is a highly contagious situation, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the necessity of online teaching, I will try to adopt the method of weekly fixed video lectures, considering that some students may not be stable The Internet supports their real-time online interaction, and I will also record the content of each class, which not only facilitates the students who cannot access the Internet to study smoothly, but also facilitates the students with language barriers (such as non-native English, language with certain communication barriers) , independent living) repeated viewing and learning.

In my blueprints, I teach students to watch relevant learning videos on apps like YouTube. This method was chosen because YouTube has the ability to translate subtitles, allowing students to choose their native language for reference and understanding. The app is available on mobile phones and computers, and is suitable for students who do not have a computer.

In view of the current online teaching environment, I will insist on creating an Office hour at a fixed time every week to solve the problems of students online in real time. Considering that students cannot enter the live real-time, I will also set up a discussion thread. The discussion here Let everyone see, and also avoid the situation that I did not reply to the questioner in time.

Finally, there will be a presentation and a quiz to test students’ academic performance in this class. Through exams and speeches, I can learn how the students understand the course and what areas I need to improve, which will be very helpful for my future teaching.

Blog #2 Learning design

So far in my study life, I think what I dislike the most is the “feeding spoon teaching method”. This kind of teaching mode is very common in China. I think this method is just for the teacher to force the students to study in order to complete the content in the textbook. This is a very unscientific teaching method. Each student learns at a different speed. Everyone has their own learning mode. Some students may have strong learning ability, but some students have slower learning ability. If you can keep accumulating the knowledge you don’t understand, in the end, students may choose to give up.
After coming to Canada, I found that the teaching mode here is completely different. The teaching mode here is that the teacher will let the students use the group discussion mode, and the students can discuss their ideas with other students, which can make the students produce different results. Discuss what you know with your classmates and help each other so that you know more.
Finally, I would like to share my own learning method. I will learn what the teacher will teach before class. Because English is not my first language, previewing in advance can help me understand what the teacher is saying during class. , and then I would suggest to write down the notes the teacher said in class, which can improve learning efficiency and better review.
